Computer icons are an integral part of any graphical user interface. Icons are small pictures of standard resolutions that visually represent objects, actions, and other concepts. In graphical user interfaces, icons are used as a quicker, more intuitive way to communicate with the user. Icons representing standard elements of a user interface are better visible than text, can be recognized faster, and are easier for new computer users.
Originally developed in 1970 by the Xerox Research Center and widely popularized by the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows platforms, icons make new users feel more comfortable with operating systems, learn quicker and interact more efficiently. Icons can be used to replace or supplement text commands. Widely used in menus, toolbars, on buttons and in the latest ribbon-style user interfaces, icons have come a long way from the original concept.
There are multiple image formats for storing icons. Microsoft Windows systems store Windows icons in the platform-specific ICO format. Mac OS systems use Mac icons in their specific formats, while Unix-based systems use PNG icons for most applications. As such, icon editing software is generally available for the Windows and Mac OS systems, while Unix users can create PNG icons with any graphic editor.
As a rule of thumb, icons are square pictures that come in a number of standard sizes and color resolutions. Most systems support icon sizes of 16x16 to 128x128 pixels, while some platforms readily accept icons as large as 512x512 pixels. The high-resolution 512x512 pixel icons were first used in Mac OS Leopard.
Pixel resolutions of all icons are operating system dependent. For example, Windows icons are defined as images in 16 and 256-color gammas as well as True Color images with alpha channel. Windows icons come in standard sizes of 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 pixels. Windows Vista implements new standards for Windows icons, including icons in sizes of up to 256x256 pixels in True Color only. Optionally, images of 128x128 and 512x512 pixels are supported. Interestingly, the high-resolution Windows Vista icons are stored in compressed PNG format instead of Windows ICO used in previous versions of Windows and for lower resolution images. Other platforms such as Windows Mobile can employ standard icons of other resolutions, such as 24x24 pixels.

On Being God: Beyond Your Life's Purpose

This book is filled with some of the most profound statements and insights of any book I have read regarding the limitations we place upon ourselves.The book opens with a new interpretation of what the story of Garden of Eden really implies. Carl's take on this is right on and makes complete sense that the alleged serpent is actually our ego, which deceives us with endless mind chatter that keeps us from knowing we are gods. Theer was no serpent beguiling eve. Her own thinking deceived her and she shared with Adam her logical conclusion that we are something other than god. We are so much greater than we have realized. We are individuations of the divine source. We were not created in God's image; instead many times we create our own image of god. We limit him as we have limited ourselves with our egoic thinking."The idea that within each of us is the god we seek is so contrary to what we have been conditioned to believe that the mention of it is to blaspheme against the finite god we think we know and believe in," writes Carl on page 22. "Our reasoning protects us from the awesome power and responsibility of being god and accepting our divine nature and seeing beyond the reality we have come to know... We yield our divine nature to the reasoning of others who think that what they know is what we should believe... The judgments we make are the essence of all our sorrows, suffering, and sadness in this reality."Another strong point the book makes is that there is no sin, hence we are sinless. Some readers may have a hard time grasping the fact that there is no good and evil, right or wrong, but if Christ paid for our sins then how is that different from the idea that there is no sin? Unless we throw out the Bible and dismiss it entirely, we must admit that this is the major theme in Jesus' teaching: don't judge. "Forgive everyone" is the same as saying, "if you cannot accept the idea that there is no sin, forgive everyone of what you think or claim to be sin." Gods do not judge at all. Only man in his current ego-ridden state of assessing what is good and evil judges in any way and then places such characterisxtics on god. Gods can only exist in neutrality that makes no judgments about anything and accepts unconditionally every act or event as part of the infinite range of possibilities.For me, the highlight of the book was Bozeman's interpretation of the parable of the talents spoken of in the New Testament where Jesus tells of a man traveling to a far country, leaving his wealth with his servants to manage until he returns. Removing judgment from the equation as Carl so eloquently does, we see that the man, who hid his talent because he was afraid of his master's reputation, is actually afraid of his own divinity. A lesson for all of us who are afraid to step into our power.Lastly, the book anticipates that some people will refuse to change their minds or believe differently even when they know that what they currently hold as truthis to their own detriment. That is the working of the ego at its self-protective core. The ego knows that anything we ascribe to god we have within ourselves. In order to realize our god-like nature we must overcome our need to judge others. The more we get rid of judgment, the more of God we will see kn ourselves. Naturally, in order to continue its own existence, the ego will show us creative ways to keep udgment alive. It's our choice. Are you a god or not?

Why I Chose to Self-Publish

There was a time when the only reputable way to publish a book was through one of the "big six publishing houses," such as Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Group, Random House, or Simon & Schuster, or one of their imprints (subsidiaries). These houses were, and still are, very selective about whose work they will publish. An off-set print run would usually be created, which meant someone - either the author or the publisher - had to store five to ten thousand copies of a title. If the book didn't sell, its print cost and a lot of trees were wasted. In those days, the publisher obtained the ISBN, did the editing (many times severely and not to the author's liking), cover design, interior layout, printing, and marketing for the author. They gave the author an up-front fee (advance) and paid royalties, netted after the publishing, printing, and marketing expenses were calculated. The publishing house owned the rights to the book and had control of the book's future success, or lack thereof.When print-on-demand (POD) technology came along, it offered publishers the ability to print one book at a time as it was purchased (demanded) by a reader. No more need for a warehouse. Books could be ordered and sold one at a time via Internet sites such as Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.Soon, we had independent publishers, not associated with the big six, cropping up and offering to publish books for any author who could put a manuscript together. These companies, known as publish-on-demand or vanity publishers, offered the same services as the major houses. But, instead of paying the author an advance, they actually charge the author a fee to defray the cost of designing the cover, laying out the interior, and printing the book. Some of these offer editing and marketing services at an additional cost. These books were not traditionally published and they were not self-published since the vanity house held the ISBN and technically had ownership of the book. They filled a gap in between and made it possible for many new authos, who may have been rejected by the big six, to bring their manuscript to book form.However, the quality was unpredictable. Cookiie-cutter templates made book covers boring, and since each publisher used their own printer (instead of Lightning Source, the printer the big six houses have used for eons), the books may have been printed on cheap paper, and assembled with glue that didn't hold the pages together long term. I recently threw away about ten copies of a title I had stored for six years. Each time I opened a book, the spine would crack and the pages would pop out.Vanity publishers further soiled their bad reputation and insulted the literary world by not being selective about the authors they chose to publish. Few, if any, required a manuscrpit to be edited. Even today, they print the book file exactly as the author submits it. For these reasons (very good ones at that), brick-and-mortar bookstores would not allow these books to take up valuable retail space on their shelves. Not to worry though. These books hardly saw the light of day. Since authors did not understand that they were responsible for their own marketing, nor did they know how to promote a book, very few were demanded by readers.Within the past few years, Lightning Source (LS) began offering publishing services to individual authors. This meant writers not only became authors, they also became independent publishers. LS uses off-set printing to create bulk orders and print-on-demand technology to print one or a few books at a time. Their publishing fee places your book in Ingram's distribution channels for one year. By the way, color printing is much more expensive than black and white. Your book will be considered a color print job and charged thusly even if only one photo in your book is in color. The printing company will not run part of your pages in black and white and the rest in color then collate and combine the pages to create the book. It's one or the other-color, or black and white. The color cover is run separately on heavier stock paper. It is very important to have someone edit and proofread your text before submitting your file to LS (or any publish on demand service) because the printer will print exactly what you send without making any changes or revisions. No matter where you are in the writing of your book-idea, developmetn, copy edit, or proofread stage-our editors can help you take your book to the next level.If you sign up for an account with LS and become a publisher, there is a cost for set up and your royalties will be the net profit after the print cost is covered. You can provide your book's interior layout and cover design yourself or you can hire someone to do the cover as I did for my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You. If you publish your book in this manner, you will still have to market it.So, I've said all this to let you know that I did not use LS to publish my book. I planned to, but when I found out about Createspace.com, I took a detour that led to very pleasant results.
